Mary Jo McCurley Named Chair of State Bar Family Law Section

Lawyer Plans to Promote Awareness of Relocation Issues in Divorce

(Dallas) The Dallas family law firm of McCurley Orsinger McCurley Nelson & Downing L.L.P. is pleased to announce that name partner Mary Jo McCurley has become chair of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Texas.

Mrs. McCurley says she wants to use her tenure as chair to heighten public awareness of the issues facing children whose divorced parents relocate.

"Relocation is one of the most emotionally charged issues in family law," she says. "Regardless of the reason for relocation, it almost always negatively impacts the child in some way, because he is going to lose out on regular contact with one of his parents. While there are no easy answers to this problem, I at least want to help foster a dialogue on this issue and make parents, judges, and family lawyers more aware of the potential pitfalls of relocation." To foster the discussion, Mrs. McCurley plans for the Family Law Section to produce a videotape of children who have themselves been affected by their parents' relocation. "We've all heard from the medical profession, judges, lawyers, and parents on this issue," she says. "Now, I want to hear from the kids."

Serving as chair of the State Bar Family Law Section is one of many held by Mrs. McCurley and several other McCurley Kinser attorneys, says senior partner Mike McCurley. "One of the fundamental tenets of this law firm is the duty to give back to our community," he says. "Our lawyers truly put their time - and their money - where their mouth is when it comes to fulfilling that duty."

Mrs. McCurley has also served as president of the Dallas Bar Association's Family Law Section and president of the Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and presently serves as national vice president of AAML. Mr. McCurley has served as chair of the State Bar Family Law Section, as well as national president of AAML. Name partner Richard Orsinger has served as chair of the State Bar Family Law and Appellate sections.

With 3,700 members, the Family Law Section is the fourth-largest section in the State Bar of Texas. The section holds one of the most popular and well-attended CLE (continuing legal education) sessions of the year - the Advanced Family Law Course - and it promotes legislation aimed at helping families in crisis.

McCurley, Kinser, McCurley, Nelson & Orsinger LLP is a nationally prominent law firm and one of the largest in Texas specializing solely in family law. More information about the firm can be found at www.mkmn.com.
