Dallas family law attorney discusses impact of divorce on children
DALLAS – Travelers who are tuned in to Sky Radio Network on American Airlines can hear Dallas family law attorney Mary Jo McCurley discussing how children are impacted when parents divorce, and how parents can help their children through the transition. Her interview is part of Sky Radio’s popular program, "America’s Most Influential Women."
Mrs. McCurley’s interview focuses on the impact that divorce can bring to the children in a family, including the often painful situation where one or both parents decide to relocate.
"Traditionally, courts across the country have focused on the best interest of the primary parent," says Mrs. McCurley, name partner in Dallas’ McCurley Orsinger McCurley Nelson & Downing, L.L.P.
In the interview, Mrs. McCurley says she is trying to help change that thinking by shifting the focus to the best interest of the children. While she served as Chairperson of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, Mrs. McCurley oversaw the production of the informational video, "Divorce and Relocation: Families at a Distance." The video features 12 children discussing how their lives were impacted when their parents decided to relocate following a divorce.
"These children make it clear, in the most heartbreaking way, that they want both parents to be in their lives," Mrs. McCurley says in the interview.
Mrs. McCurley also points out the emotional toll that divorce takes on children, as well as what parents can do to help lessen the impact. Among the tips she suggests are for parents to never disparage the other parent in front of their children, and to reassure children that they are loved and that the divorce is not their fault.
Mrs. McCurley is routinely recognized as one of the top attorneys in Texas. Texas Monthly named her one of the state’s Top 50 Women Lawyers and included her as a Texas Super Lawyer the past three years. She also was named in D Magazine as one of the Best Lawyers in Dallas in 2005.
Sky Radio Network provides business, technology, health and entertainment programming to airlines. Past interviews on the "America’s Most Influential Women" program include former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Disney-ABC Television Group President Anne Sweeney. Mrs. McCurley’s segment, airing on American Airlines flights in April 2006, can be heard here .
With offices in Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio, McCurley Orsinger McCurley Nelson & Downing, L.L.P., is one of the largest firms in Texas specializing solely in family law.
